I Been To Your House An' Seen What You Adore

if you're alright with politics.

i don't spend much time thinking or talking about politics. i get jaded and cynical. i don't know who to vote for next year. but i did just read a transcript of a speech that Sen. Obama gave at the "Call to Renewal" conference, an inter-faith gathering to speak about issues of poverty, justice and religion in America and beyond. This conference featured some writers that I very much admire, including Jim Wallis and Brian MacClaren, so I was interested to read Obama's speech. It's pretty awesome. I need to do plenty more research before the election, but this speech left a really good taste in my mouth. Read it here if you like:

i read this right after he gave it. this is one of the reasons that i will most likely vote for him. his stance on war isn't as great though.

I think I would feel about Obama much as I felt about Jimmy Carter. I believe he's a nice guy, but I just disagree with him on too many things to want to vote for him because of that. I appreciate a lot of what he says regarding religion in America in his speech. There's a lot of truth there. I find inconsistencies in some of his positions. I think his foreign policy is nice in theory but doesn't really make the most sense in reality. I'm not sure I've heard anything in regards to Iraq I totally love, for instance, but I can't see his plan working for the benefit of either Iraq or the U.S. It's not so simple, I suppose.

I'm also prolife. You might have guessed that by my screen name, either that or I must be reasserting that I have no plans for a sex change operation. The funny thing is that my religious views shape more my inability to ignore abortion than it affected my decision to oppose it in the first place. I wouldn't really mind sitting down and reasoning with Obama on this. Somehow, I don't think it's happening. Hmmm.. maybe I'll write to him and see if that's a possibility. LOL

As for politics, I really haven't followed it like I should have this year. I'm only starting to watch a few things here and there. I feel pretty detached from it since moving to UT. I was spoiled when I lived in CA because it was so easy to find info. on elections and on candidates. Here sometimes I find out about local elections the day after. I've also become a tad cynical about the whole thing. I guess that seems to be nearly universal these days -- maybe the one thing most people agree on?

hurrah for Obama indeed! I definitely am inspired by his message.
thank you for your recent book suggestions,... actually not so recent as was given at last year's Boston/avalon show. at that time you asked me what i had recently read - and I replied that both of Obama's books were great. if you want to do more research (although time is hard to find these days) i would suggest reading his second book to find out more about his "platform" (for lack of a better word). His first book will give you more background into his life and how it has shaped his beliefs and views over the years.
Both are a great supplement to the hype that's going on presently - it's hard to decipher what's media hype and what's actually sincerely true in the electorate race.
Good luck with your research - thank you for voting, whichever way you do.
